Can I firstly say a big thank you to Nadine for organising this and sending the fabric over - it really is gorgeous.

I couldn't initially decide what to make with my fabric. I wanted something that I would use, but what?! Yesterday though inspiration took hold as I have wanted to make some bunting for my lounge for ages now to go across my window as I have an unused curtain pole that runs along the ceiling that is crying out to be decorated - I'd use my fabric for that!
I saved one of the pieces because I'm going to make a cushion for the lounge at a later date but can I say, do check out this fabric as the feel, quality and pattern of the pieces I was sent are excellent and I think it's a range I will be buying more of in the future.
Creative ways for children to spend time outdoors and discover nature.

In an era when the iPad is often more appealing than the park, it can be difficult to encourage kids to get off the couch and go outside. In this inspirational book, with ideas for children of all ages, foraging expert Fiona Bird shows the value of playing outside and discovering nature for children and families alike.

First Fiona teaches children about their environment, including conservation guidelines and tips on how to forecast the weather. Armed with this knowledge, the outside adventure goes Into the Woods, in Chapter 1, with outdoor crafts including making leaf art bunting, a dream catcher, and a woodland broom. In Chapter 2, Meadows, Hedgerows, and Hills, ideas include wild face paints, natural dyeing, and making potpourri. Onward to Chapter 3, Seashore, where children learn how to go beachcombing, identify different seaweeds, play beach hopscotch, and make a mollusk wind chime. In Chapter 4, Water and Wetlands, children learn to make their own charcoal and go on an animal track and poop hunt! For those who don't want to move far from home, there's plenty to do in My Wild Garden and Kitchen, Chapter 5, such as making a snail holiday village and attracting bugs, as well as developing hunting and gathering skills, with seasonal recipes made from natural ingredients.
So let your kids go wild outside, and enjoy watching them learn and blossom.

To be honest, there isn't much else for me to say here as the blurb from the book does it all so neatly that I would only be repeating it. As the summer holidays are upon us, this is a great book for encouraging less screen time and more outside 'doing' time. It's a particularly apt book for throwing into the suitcase and taking on holiday with you as some of the chapters lend themselves particularly well to this, especially if, like me, you don't actually live near the sea! This book certainly has enough ideas inside to keep yourself, and your little ones busy all year round!
This blogging business is getting so sporadic. I just don't seem to be able to find the time to actually sit and blog, I guess that's the problem with using instagram so much, it's so much more well instant.

Anyways, what has everyone been up to? I've been back up to Hope & Elvis for a mixed-media workshop with Mrs Bertimus, but I think that deserves a blog post all of it's own which I will try and do soon, promise. I've also been spending some pennies.

I've not sewed anything for so long I think I had convinced myself that I had forgotten what to do, so I reverted to a tried and tested method instead - the Miss Marlo dress from Pip Lincolne's Sew La Tea Do book.

I've made this dress twice before and actually, with no buttonholes or zips, it's fairly straight forward to make.
I found some fabric I had bought from Abakhan and set to work. I'll admit, I'm the worlds slowest sewer and I really took my time making this today. I used my overlocker too for the seams and made sure everything matched up just right. I even sewed the name of the fabric into the dress too as it's called Down to Earth and I thought that was nice!
Now the weather just needs to warm up so I can wear it, or rather them!
I've been using the bestselling Cleanse and Polish from Liz Earle for a very long time, and when I recently ran out, I decided to look around and see what other products were available that were similar in nature but maybe not so in price. I scoured the internet and came across the Pure range from M&S. At twice the size, and half the price of the beselling brand, I figured I'd give their hot cloth cleanser a go.
It comes in two varieties, the original, and rose, so I ordered both. I've only used the original one so far but I have to say, I think it's as good as what I was using before.
I also managed to get my hands on one of the most talked about moisturisers around, thanks to India Knight and her review of it in The Sunday Times Style section a few weeks ago. It's by Bliss who are a spa company and it's called Drench 'n' Quench. It's billed as being a 'transformative cream to water moisturiser' and I have to say, I'm hooked on it already.

It looks like a turquoise gel and you apply and rub in for 30 seconds and then it transforms and feels more like a powder. It doesn't contain an SPF or anti-ageing products but it plumps and fills your face with much needed hydration. If you can get your hands on it, then at £29.50 for 50ml I'd say you have nothing to loose but it took me a lot of web-searching before I found this now sold-out product.
Time certainly seems to be flying by.

I've still not really attempted any sewing at all. I don't know if this is because Agatha Van is no longer my sewing haven, and it is now the fourth bedroom in my new house, appropriately named #notagathavan or what. I've got so many projects I would like to be sewing, and the fabric to do it, and yet....something is stopping me. I desperately want to begin my Merchant & Mills linen skirt. It's been cut out ready to go for a good six months, if not more, and yet there it still sits, unstitched and destined to never be finished. I did buy some gorgeous fabric the other week though - but what to turn it into?!

In other news, I made a mini crochet shawl the other week. I'm not entirely convinced it's big enough but some very talented crocheters over on IG liked my picture which was incredibly flattering!

I've also restarted my hexipuffs from the Beekeeper's Quilt by tiny owl knits. Since beginning this project, Stephanie has got married and had a baby and I've still only made a handful of these beauties. I am improving though and can rustle one up in about 30 minutes, which when I started out on the double-pin journey I feared I'd never be able to make one, let alone 12!

I was heavily tempted to pop on over to Abakhan today for a fabric/yarn fix and then I got my sensible head on which told me to actually use some of the stash I've got here rather than buying more to sit unused in a cupboard. I've started this project this afternoon and have already used almost one ball. It's a quick easy knit, and the wool is really nice to use too. It's nice to have something I don't really need to concentrate on, unlike those hexis!
I've seen a gorgeous project over on Instagram for this gorgeous cowl made by Chelsea Berkompas called Rooted. I adore the colours she has chosen for this. Maybe when I've finished the above project?!
Right, I had better away, I've at least 5 book reviews to be getting on with. Don't forget, if you love to read, please pop on over to my book blog and say hello! And while I remember, the winner of my Tiny Toys to Knit book was Henrietta Bird - so well done to you. I'll be in touch shortly for your address!
Time really does seem to be flying by. I've also had the keys for my new house two months and that's a frightening thought.

In terms of crafting, I'm still carrying on with those projects started last year, ie that sleeve that still isn't finished but I came to a point where I needed to see some completion so I've been working on some smaller and quicker projects just so I could see some end results.

I haven't really done any sewing as such, but I did rustle up these bears for my girlies from an early edition of Love Sewing magazine that I've used before. Thankfully there were both happy with them.

Last year I brought some Drops craft cotton yarn to make dishcloths with and it's been sitting around waiting ever since. It's great to work with, comes in some fab colours and is less than £1.00 a ball (I got mine from Wool Warehouse which I love to use). I made the first one (the raspberry shade) from a pattern in 30 Minute Knits and the mustard one I made up using my book 250 Knitting Stitches. I have to say, having never used the cotton to make a dishcloth before that I wondered how it would last but I've used them constantly, they haven't lost their colour or shape and they still look as good as they did when they came off of the needles. I've got another two balls left to use so I'll be whipping up some more when I get the chance.

Speaking of my 30 minute knits book that I borrowed from the library - it's not 30 minutes, no siree bob it's not, in fact I'd love to rename this book because I've used it before and it didn't take me 30 minutes then to make either the wristwarmers or the bobble hat and I'm not a particularly slow knitter either! Anyway, the 7year old liked the look of the little bear in the book so I said I would make him for her. He took hours and then she wanted a scarf for him too! He's cute though.
If, like me, you are feeling the need to make something small, the fabulous people over at Search Press have given me a copy of Tiny Toys to Knit by Sachiyo Ishii to giveaway. All you have to do is leave a comment right here telling me which design you would make first, or over on my Instagram page (@thecraftyreader) to be in with a chance of winning. If you enter here and on my IG page, that's two entries. I'll close the competition at 6pm UK time on Sunday 21st February so good luck and off you go.
For the purposes of this blog post, I've just been to check, and I seem to have somewhere in the region of 35 in all.

Now for my second question: how many of these do you actually use? Is this number dramatically less?

I use only a handful of my books if I'm totally honest. I use my Primrose Bakery book for making my lemon drizzle and my banana and chocolate loaf cakes. I use my Marian Keyes book for delicious rock cakes, and How to be a Domestic Goddess by Nigella Lawson produces fool-proof brownies. The others I use rarely, if at all.

The one book I turn to again and again though is a little-known one. I picked it up years ago in The Works for a smidgen of it's rrp and I use it constantly. It never lets me down.
Gill Holcombe's book entitled How to feed your family... is brilliant. It contains recipes and whole meal suggestions for everything, and none of them require fancy ingredients or tons of sugar. As I type I currently have the dough for some chocolate chip cookies resting in the fridge that the girlies helped me whip up this afternoon.

What's your fool-safe go-to baking/cookery book? I wonder if it's on my shelf!

As it is, I am now fully installed in my girlie house of three. All the boxes are unpacked and put away, and I'm attempting to sort the box room to make it into a sewing room due to lack of Agatha space.
Does anyone still read blogs anymore? That is a question that I've read on a few blogs recently and I have to say, I echo those sentiments. I know of some who used to follow me and no longer do, and I'm trying not to take it personally. I'll keep going for now in the hope that someone somewhere out there is also reading this.
I don't know what this year will bring, but I hope to carry on with this regardless.
I was at the wonderful Loop in London taking part in a creature making day with the fabulous Julie Arkell. Things have been a little difficult of late, so I decided that this was a massive treat to myself as I know I'll never be able to actually afford to buy one of Julie's creatures for myself, so this was the next best thing.

I arrived in London bright and early for our 11am start and we (there were 7 of us altogether) met our naked creatures. I chose mine as she was lying face down in the basket, and not standing up like all of the others, that was a sign I thought, that we were meant to be together.

Julie passed around a whole cacophony of patterns to use to make our creatures, there were hats galore to chose from, plus wings, trousers and knickers to create and clothe our creatures in. I went for the fabric ear hat which involved knitting a strip of wool then crocheting two ends and finally choosing some fabric to be added to make the ears.

The ear fabric chose me as I had rummaged around inside Julie's box of fabrics, and this checked piece had adhered itself to one of the other pieces so I decided it had chosen itself to be used. There was lots of quiet in the room as we all concentrated on our knitting patterns.

I then added some grey knitted knickers in a very soft wool as no one wants to be wearing itchy pants, do they? Then I used some more of Julie's fabric to create a mustard and white spotty frock for my creature, who named herself Audrey.

our collection of creatures

A quick sew around of the edge later and I had one fully dressed creature. I think I may add a knitted apron with a name tag on it at a later date, but for now Audrey is complete.

She's been a firm hit here, in fact my mother tried to steal her away from me but I'm no fool and Audrey is currently in my lounge resting on some crafty books.

Fairly soon she will be residing on the mantelpiece in my new lounge as I hope to be moving Christmas week into my new girlie pad for three. 2015 has been a challenging year in many ways but I am looking forward to 2016 as being my year of 'new beginnings'.
If I had had time, I would have brought my own papers with me, but there was enough choice there for me to be happy with my lampshade. It has verses on it from Twinkle, twinkle, little star and parts of Alice in Wonderland and Winnie the Pooh on the panels, as well as some maps and some images of Jennifer's own work too. I also typed the date onto one of the panels so I will always be reminded of my birthday workshop.
If you are within the Staffordshire area, do take a look at the many other workshops that are run there. I think I'm going to be going back!

The first is the newest title from bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love fame) called Big Magic. The synopsis is thus:

Readers of all ages and walks of life have drawn inspiration from Elizabeth Gilbert's books for years. Now, this beloved author shares her wisdom and unique understanding of creativity, shattering the perceptions of mystery and suffering that surround the process - and showing us all just how easy it can be.

By sharing stories from her own life, as well as those from her friends and the people that have inspired her, Elizabeth Gilbert challenges us to embrace our curiosity, tackle what we most love and face down what we most fear.

Whether you long to write a book, create art, cope with challenges at work, embark on a long-held dream, or simply to make your everyday life more vivid and rewarding, Big Magic will take you on a journey of exploration filled with wonder and unexpected joys.

I downloaded the sample onto my kindle and flew through it without pause so I ordered it instantly. I'm looking forward to taking some time out to sit and read this.

The second book is one that I think I am going to treasure forever. In fact, browsing through it with my seven year old yesterday, even she declared it's pages as magical. The book is called The Magpie and the Wardrobe and is the creation of Sam McKechnie and Alexandrine Portelli. I don't think I can even begin to describe it accurately though so here's the low-down:

Enter the spellbinding world of The Magpie & the Wardrobe. This truly unique book is a treasury of marvels and oddities, a lovingly curated compendium of time-honoured traditions and peculiar customs that have bewitched us for generations.
Discover simple magic, heirloom recipes and forgotten fairytales in this eclectic treasury. The twelve chapters, representative of the seasons, present the celebrations, superstitions and folklore that shape our year. From cherished traditions like Valentine's Day to the lost excitement of May Day Eve, The Magpie & the Wardrobe reveals a calendar bursting with history, imagination and curious facts. Take a closer look at your favourite homespun rituals and the magic we conjure every day; make a candle wish, mix a moon oil elixir, and hang your romantic hopes on the predictions of an apple peel. Illustrated by a unique collection of ephemera and embellished with trinkets and charms, this sumptuous volume will appeal to the creative and curious.

The books travels through the seasons from January to December and is full of rituals and traditions that filter through the months. Each page is beautiful in both its colour and content, the photographs are delightful, and it's the sort of book that you will discover new things upon each reading. It truly is a wonderful book (I'm running out of superlatives to describe it quite frankly)!

This lovely book by the talented Claire Wellesley-Smith caught my eye a few weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to be sent a copy by the publishers at Pavillion to read. The first thing to note is that the cover itself is made of a velvety material which makes it very tactile indeed. I know it won't be to everyone's taste but I really loved the feel of it.

The idea behind the book is thus:

The pleasures to be had from slowing down can be many, with connections to sustainability, simplicity, reflection, and tuning into traditional and other multicultural textile traditions. Slow Stitch is a much-needed guide to adopting a less-is-more approach, valuing quality over quantity, and bringing a meaningful and thoughtful approach to textile practice. Claire Wellesley-Smith introduces a range of ways in which you can slow your textile work down, including: * Using simple techniques inspired by traditional practice (including hand-stitch rhythms) * Reusing and re-inventing materials (reuse even old textile projects) * Limiting your equipment * Mending revisited (practical and decorative techniques) * Project ideas and resources that help towards making a more sustainable textile practice Richly illustrated throughout, and showcasing work from the best textile artists who work in this way, this is a truly inspirational book for those looking to reconnect with their craft and to find a new way of working.

Taking heed from the Slow Movement, Slow Stitch encourages you to take more time over the work that you produce. That a row of hand stitched work is equally as worthwhile as row after row of machine made stitching. It practically begs you to grab some old remnants of fabric and to begin piecing them together to create beautiful, unique things that you can stop and start at leisure.

Claire showcases the talents of a number of textile artists whose slow stitch projects all vary from each other, and encourages the reader in how they too can participate and produce their own similar work from that shown. My hand stitching isn't very creative but I have to say that this book has certainly made me want to look further into the meditativeness of slow stitching, and I think a stitch journal might be right up my street.

Is anyone still out there?! Apologies, it's been a while again since I've blogged anything but I'm here now! This summer, Agatha van finally got electricity which means that she can now be used as my crafting caravan and not just a storage area for my bits and bobs. By the way, if you follow me over on Instagram (@thecraftyreader) then close this page down now as you'll have seen all these photos before!!!!

My first task was to bring everything down to start storing it properly within her many cupboards. It took a while, but I'm happy with where everything is now located.

Cause right now I need a happy place to be

Then I had to start adding a bit of 'me' decoration to her. Some fabric and wool bunting across the window, and photos of my family and blogging buddies makes me happy. Can you spot Lazy Daisy Jones and Mrs Bertmius here?!

The next job is to get round to furnish her properly. She's just had a new carpet and I've changed the curtains.

It's the seats to do next but that's going to take a bit of time to get perfect and I'm not going to rush it. I also need to check I've brought enough fabric to do it all!

I also made a few cushion covers, none of them match, but I used fabrics that make me smile, as well as a few purchased ones, including my dottie angel cushion cover.
Illustrator and papercutter, Jessica Palmer, has created 75 pages of enchanting hand-drawn pictures for you to colour and lose yourself in. The images all have a magical woodland theme, and each one includes a a 'hidden jewel', intricately worked into the design, which will include rings, brooches, pendants, chains, bracelets and earrings featuring insects, animals and leafy patterns. The book will include designs that fit on a single page as well as those that extend across a double-page spread. Some of the designs will fill the entire page and others will sit within it. Others will have space left for the reader to extend the design themselves.

Colouring books for adults are the newest craze to hit the shops this year, and even when you browse the bestseller lists, colouring books crop up along with the top fiction and non-fiction reads. I must admit, I flick through lots of them when I see them out and about, but there have been lots where there are one or two nice pages inside and then the others are a bit bland, and samey. There doesn't always seem to be anything special about them. When I saw this new publication from Search Press however, I knew I was onto a colouring winner.

Jessica Palmer is a papercutter, which is the most amazing talent, it just looks so difficult and intricate, and way above anything I could even contemplate doing. Anyway, she has just brought out her first colouring book, and I hope it won't be her last.

Tangle Wood has 75 pages of beautiful woodland designs in it, some are on one page only, and some extend to two pages. There are complex scenes, and much simpler ones where you can add your own ideas and designs should you be able to draw (unlike me who sticks to colouring only). I loved the detail involved in the images, it's not only so wonderfully done but the pictures are gorgeous. I hope my photographs do them justice. Here's a peak inside:

We still have a few more days of the holidays left as the girlies don't go back until Tuesday but I must sort out them, and myself, for hopefully I will find some teaching work very shortly.

I have been determined during my time off to finish those pesky wips that lie about and remain an annoying temptation that need completing. Therefore, having been challenged by my friend Caroline, aka @granplumley to finish my granny square blanket by the end of July, I quickly rose to the challenge, provided that I got my yoga blanket knitted up first!

Almost finished

And I did them both! I am very impressed, especially as it was still warm during July (what happened in August I'll never know) and knitting and hooking with two largeish blankets on your lap is no mean feat. At one point, the yoga blanket came out onto the lawn during Wimbledon fortnight!

So here they are in their finished glory:

One very large yoga blanket knitted in James C Brett Aztec Alpaca Aran wool

One granny square odds-and-ends blanket to go with my other one from Caroline.

Next though, I need to finish one of my first ever crochet projects that I started with Lottie forever ago. It's from an early edition of Mollie Makes magazine, and whilst I'm over halfway through, I've just unsewn all of the squares I'd put together and removed the cream from the edges of every single square. For the actual blanket I'd used Sirdar Crofter which isn't a particularly cheap wool, but for the edges I had chosen a particularly rough acrylic yarn that I didn't actually like the feel of, so away it went. I now have 60-odd squares that all need a final row, plus more to make up and hook together and then this beauty will be completed too - one day!

I've made lots of other things too, and Agatha van finally has electricity so I'm in there lots and starting to make her my own at last - more on that to come!

It's been every shade going since my early teens but recently I've reached a slump where I'm not content with what colour it is, nor can I decide what I actually want. In the past five years alone, it's been red, brown and blonde and now I fancy a change.

Actually what I want to do is to grow the colour out and just embrace the grey strands that are already coming through. My hairdresser is not so keen on this, says it will age me, which may be true, but I really want this to happen - just to see.

My hair is currently like this, so I am thinking to chop off some of the bottom so that there is less colour on it, and then to proceed with the growing out colour process. I love going to the hairdresser and having my hair done, but it grows rather quickly which makes any colour time-consuming, frequent and costly. Lauren over at http://howbourgeois.blogspot.co.uk/ has just spent the past few years going through this non colouring process - she has lots of white in her hair which makes her look spectacular with her grey, in my opinion, and I don't think mine will look like this in any way shape or form, but I want to go ahead with it. (I think I just made a joke there)!

Forgotten Ways for Modern Days draws on the wisdom of the homemakers, gardeners, crafters and kitchen alchemists of the past who kept homes clean, gardens in order and hands busy using natural products and items found close to hand, either around the house or in the garden. Ingredients from kitchen cupboards, picked from the veg patch or foraged from hedgerows were used to clean clothes, cure a chesty cough and freshen the skin, whilst scraps of fabric were recycled in endless useful ways. With sections on Cleaning, Laundry, The Kitchen, In the Garden, Natural Health, and Beauty, Forgotten Ways for Modern Days brings this knowledge up to date and shares with the reader clever tips that make as much sense today, such as how to brighten your whites by putting eggshells in your wash. as well as an array of handy projects, including how to make Re-usable Beeswax Food Wrap, a Honey and Lemon Throat Soother and a Bits and Bobs Eiderdown.

Rachelle's book came out last month and I had to treat myself to a copy pretty much immediately. I have to say I jolly well love it too. It also has an introduction by crafty blogger pal Tif Fussell, aka Dottie Angel.

This is more than just a craft book, though it does have things to make of a crafty nature inside it, but a whole new way of living. There are concoctions and recipes inside for all mater of goodies - a beeswax for bringing your wooden items back to new, reed diffusers, kindling wraps, dandelion syrup and an almond and rosewater cleansing cream are just some of the wonderful contents contained within its beautiful pages - and the packaging and layout of the book are really nice too.

This is a lovely book about getting back to basics, making time to produce your own things rather than buying chemically filled products and having a simpler way of living. I can't argue with her, it's a life I want to live too.

The first workshop was to meet and sew with the wonderful Jessie Chorley. We were making journals that day and it was a wonderful day of fun and laughter.
As usual I ended up on the naughty table with Tracy and Louise but we had the best time ever - and I think that secretly everyone else wanted to be on our table too! The second workshop was with Leah Halliday to make apron dresses. It was a challenging day and there was a lot of concentrating to do but my dress is almost complete - I've just got to hem it and handstitch the inside and then it is complete. I've been debating which set to purchase for a while and had asked lots of tarot-reading internet friends for their favourite cards. I already have a Rider Waite set, and two of the Titania packs, but they are currently at the bottom of my storage unit and I wanted some more, right here, right now. There have been some major changes happening here lately and I felt like I needed some guidance to help me find which path I would be treading.

I had a few recommendations to peruse whilst deciding - youtube is great for this purpose as there are lots of tarot reviews online which is nice because you get to see the cards themselves before splashing the cash. I debated between the following sets:
These are all gorgeous sets and I liked each of them, but I didn't love any of them. I continued my quest and discovered this set, published independently and therefore only available from limited suppliers. They are also American which means a heftyish price in comparison to the above tarot sets but they really made my heart sing and these are what I chose...
These are mostly black and white drawings with a splash of colour on them, designed by Kim Krans from The Wild Unknown and there's not a person amongst them as most of the images are of animals and the outside area. I think they are beautiful and I've really been taking my time getting to know them. Unsurprisingly they have proved pretty accurate to date! Inside the lid of the box it says "Welcome to the Wild Unknown tarot. You'll find no wrongs or rights inside this box, only mirrors for reflection. Open your mind, draw a card and have fun on your journey."
The beauty hour was on at my parents' house the other week, and I got sucked in whilst in the kitchen to an eye make-up company called Eyeko. I've never heard of them before, but they only specialise in eye make-up, and even Alexa Chung is a fan! I watched the demo and was suitably impressed but then left to return on my journey home.

Over 2 hours later though I was still thinking about these products - me who spends about £1.50 on mascara was suddenly debating buying a product that retails for £20! I know, £20 for a mascara, bloody ridiculous if you ask me!

I'll just have a quick look on the website I thought, see if the offer they had on was still available. Just a look mind you....

There it was - two mascaras, one eyebrow pencil and one eyeliner for under £30 with p&p. If I brought them individually, it would cost me nearly £80 - the results on the screen did look impressive....

I ordered it. I must have been insane. Would this be a total waste of money? So far, I've only used the skinny brush mascara and the making eyes eyeliner pencil and I have to say I love them both. Yes they are costly but the eyeliner goes on like a dream and stays put which is a bonus, and I have never noticed my eyelashes looking so long as they do with the mascara - its fabulous.

What's your biggest make-up splurge? I won't tell anyone!
This time in the form of a Ravelry pattern that I've seen loads on pinterest, and most recently on Sophie's blog nest.

How gorgeous is this sweater? Incredibly so, in my humble opinion, and I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. It's called 'climb every mountain' which just made me want it even more! I've just downloaded the pattern - and kind of freaked myself out by how complicated it looks, but I've committed now.

An email to wool warehouse two weeks ago informed me that they would have a new delivery of Cascade 220 sport wool in shortly (as I wanted the straw colourway - totally mirroring Sophie here).
It has now arrived in stock, so 7 balls of wool will be winging their way to me shortly. I am envisaging lots of evenings at home alone soon so will have lots of time to read, knit and craft. Hopefully!
If you haven't seen it in all of it's glory - feast your eyes on this:

Made up of over 300 hexipuffs this is a year long project and I wanted to give it a go. Only problem is that it involves double pins and I hate using them (cause I'm rubbish)!

I decided that to begin with I'd treat myself and order some Jamieson's Spindrift Shetland Wool and promptly purchased 6 balls - my choices were mainly based on what they were called!

I started this Friday - and failed. I started again on Saturday - and failed. I then spent another age trying on Sunday and eventually a hexipuff started to come together.

It must be right because even Stephanie herself favourited it over on Twitter!

I think I am knitting it the wrong way round though as I have to turn them right side out when I get to the end, but I'm doing it, and as of yesterday, one hexipuff became two!

I'm going to keep going and hopefully I'll get quicker as I'm going along. They aren't perfect but I'm hoping that once they are sewn together, all flaws will disappear in it's beekeeping glory!

At the end of last month I was very lucky to get a coveted place on the Julie Arkell stitchy day up at Louise's studio.

There were less than 20 of us there on the day, but over 150 people applied to go - such is the draw of the wonderful Ms Arkell. To say I was in awe of her is an understatement, but she is super nice and friendly - and if she ends up on Instagram, it's all down to me!!!!!

We started off by making wooly war brooches. This is mine - I don't know if you can see, but it says Happy on it, because that is how I always feel when I go to H&E. I always seem to end up sitting with the naughty, giddy people though - Louise must think I'm such a rogue!

We were having such a good time I barely took any photos though!

In the afternoon we were able to make our own Julie Arkell inspired thingy. I chose to make a watch, using one of Louise's own vintage watch straps that she had recently acquired. I don't think it is finished yet, for I believe it needs more adding to it - when I have a mo that is!
I wanted so much to buy a piece of Julie's work but alas and alack the pennies weren't flowing sufficiently for that to occur - her stuff is not cheap, no siree bob it's not, but I did get some postcards to sit alongside my books.
Hesta posted a picture of one of her beautiful crochet nests, and I was smitten.
She runs workshops to make them, but as she is so far away from me, there was no chance that I could attend one so I asked her if she sells them. A hesitant reply came, and it was a sort of maybe!

Time continued, and lots of other photos, plus some more nest pictures came and went over on IG and I kept up my hinting. Then came the reply I was looking for, a nest of my own was to be winging it's way to me, once Hesta could bear to part with it!
My nest arrived today and it is beautiful. It is so intricate and delicate I'm glad it safely made the journey northwards in it's cardboard box. I plan for it to reside in Agatha van where I can marvel in all her beauty whenever I am crafting away.
I've not managed to make very much recently as I'm still teaching, but I did start, and finish, a Ros Badger bow scarf which I'm delighted with, and the lady herself commented on how great my knitting was over on Twitter - squeal. Think I'd better go and make another now (despite the heatwave)!
And talking of heatwaves, I've finally gotten around to ordering my Salt-water sandals!!!!! Having not found a stockist to try them on, I was dubious about ordering online. However, if you go onto the Salt-water website they have a template to download so you can see which size fits you! Hopefully I've got it right, and my sandals are on their way right now. I'm thinking I need these exact socks to go with them too!
